BMI is a quick screening number — it says nothing about what your weight is made of. Three cases where it misleads:
Muscle is denser than fat. Lifters and athletes often score as 'overweight' on BMI while carrying very little body fat.
Muscle naturally declines with age. A 'normal' BMI can hide low muscle mass and more body fat than the number suggests.
BMI can't see where fat sits. Two people with the same BMI can carry very different amounts of abdominal fat — the kind that matters most for health.
